What does Photovoltaic and PV mean?
Sometimes said “PV” for short, these are solar electric systems. The photovoltaic effect. Broken down “photo” is based on the Greek word for “light” and “voltaic” is a volt or an electric current. This is the process where energy from the sun is transformed and used as electricity.
What are PV Cells Made of?
PV cells are made of silicon that is put under a piece of glass. Then, the photos come through the sunlight and hit the PV cells. The silicon wires catch the electrons and then create electricity.
What are solar cells made of?
Solar cells are made from silicon wafers. Then, these groups of silicon wafers (solar cells) create a photovoltaic module — also called PV– which is just a solar panel.
How does a grid-tied solar system work?
In a grid-tied solar system, you can either use all of the electricity generated or you can send it back to the utility company so that your account is credited (net-metering). This allows you to reduce your electric bills, based on the amount of electricity that was generated by your panels.
What is net metering?
Net metering is when you are able to get credit and basically sell back the renewable energy to the electric company. The customer would only have to pay for the amount of electricity they are actually using– all of the surplus will be credited.
Would my home or business be a good candidate for solar?
Deciding if solar is right for you is a hard decision. However, the most important factor is the orientation of your home or business. If there are trees or obstructions or facing the wrong way — the easiest way to find out is to get a free consultation by the solar endeavor team of installers, engineers, and designers.
How do I figure out how big my solar array should be?
Our engineers and designers work together to recommend how big your solar array should be. We will show your our equations and the math behind it to explain why we are recommending the array we tell you. We agree that bigger is not always better.
Is it difficult to switch to solar power?
No. When you work with Solar Endeavors, we do everything for you. It is a turn key agreement where we do the grants and paperwork for you!
How long do PV systems last?
Most systems last 25 years, however some have lasted more than 30 years. It depends on how much direct sunlight the panels receive. Most manufacturers will give a 25 year warentee on the panels.
Will solar panels wear out? Do They lose their efficiency?
Studies show that panels will lose .25% efficiency per year. This is why most panels come with a 20-25 year warranty– yet they are said to last 2x as long.
